Assess Your Sense of Self

In the busy world of motherhood, women can easily lose touch with their preferences, hopes, goals, dreams, feelings, beliefs, needs, and core values. With this in mind, I invite you to take a few minutes and answer the questions below. Don’t worry if you have trouble answering any (or all) of them. Since publishing Missing In Action, I’ve received enough emails to know that they are tough questions to answer, no matter how old your children may be. I offer them simply as a means for you to remember and embrace what is important to you.

  • When you daydream, what do you see?
  • What’s one thing you really want to do?
  • What’s your favorite way to procrastinate?
  • What skill or talent would you love to possess?
  • What does your “child within” ask of you?
  • What’s one good thought that can distract you?
  • What’s one impulse you’d like to act on?
  • What’s one way you’d like to see yourself grow?
  • What do you do most often when you are alone?
  • What would you do if you had more time?
  • What would you do if you had more money?
  • What does your ideal day look like?
  • What does your ideal self look like?
  • When you were young, what did you want to become?
  • If you were to give yourself one present, what would it be?
  • What activity causes you to forget time and the rest of the world?

I designed these questions to illuminate some of your core values. A value is something you recognize as important and meaningful. For instance, if you submit “painting” as an answer, you might conclude that creativity is a core value in your life. Likewise, you may provide answers that suggest any one of the following values: Achievement, power, nature, affection, humor, family, adventure, inner harmony, wealth, personal development, recognition, loyalty, knowledge, health, friendship, fame, order, or financial independence. However, this is only a partial list. Think about your answers and what they represent for you. .

Reclaim Your Sense of Self

In not satisfying core values on a regular basis, mothers may feel the distress associated with Maternal Intrapersonal Anxiety (MIA). As a Self-Care Coach, I help mothers claim those aspects of their lives that relate directly to their sense of sense. In other words, I help mothers identify, connect with, and incorporate the core values central to their well-being, values that may have been forgotten, denied, ignored, or neglected over time. I can also help mothers

  • Improve interpersonal communication skills
  • Create appropriate boundaries
  • Create more positive internal dialogue or self-talk
  • Address conflicting feelings/feelings of loss around motherhood
  • Recognize symptoms of grief
  • Improve the “tone” in the home environment
  • Improve coping skills
  • Improve self-esteem
  • Create a balanced life
  • Gain a sense of empowerment
